About.

Johina G.Concheso has been a muralist since the age of 18. The daughter of a Cuban architect, she grew up surrounded by brushes, pigments, and sketches, learning from an early age that light and space can engage in dialogue with art.

She studied Painting Restoration in Madrid (CEROA) and Art History and Cataloguing of Works of Art at Christie’s in London.

Since her beginnings in 1987, she has worked in many parts of the world—England, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Singapore, Dubai, China, and beyond. She creates murals that integrate seamlessly with architecture and seek harmony with those who inhabit the space.

Her projects blend tradition and modernity: she has worked in historic landmarks in Spain, including the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Palace of El Pardo, and the Royal Chapel of La Granja, while also contributing to cutting-edge hotels and restaurants such as the presidential suite of the Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid, as well as commissions for international firms in London and Saudi Arabia. Her versatility allows her to move from monochrome graphite works to lush botanical murals and oriental-inspired designs, always guided by the principle that each piece should be unique and tailored to its surroundings.

Beyond creation, Johina has devoted two decades to teaching and restoration, collaborating with AECID and the Office of the Historian of Havana on UNESCO-sponsored projects, passing on mural techniques to new generations. Her curiosity has even led her into cinema, hand-painting dresses for Scarlett Johansson under the direction of legendary costume designer Milena Canonero for a Wes Anderson film.

Each of her works begins with listening: to the space, to the light, and to the client’s vision. Her murals are not meant to impose themselves, but rather to accompany, to bring serenity and elegance, and to leave an artistic imprint that transforms walls into lived experiences.

For those interested in the collaborative side of her career, Johina shared important projects and research with muralist Phillida Cholmeley, with whom she has been creating since 1987, and has also collaborated extensively with award winning artist Maria Emslie in more recent years.
